La piazza, per lungo tempo centro della vita cittadina, è dedicata ai fondatori Nicola e Costa. A seguito delle contese tra Ruggero II ed i Normanni l’antico borgo andò distrutto. Nel dicembre del 1171, l’Abate Eustasio, che mirava a ripopolare il feudo di Castellano per goderne nuovamente le pingui rendite, donò la Chiesa di San Leone Magno e le terre circostanti ai due coloni otrantini, Nicola e Costa, con favorevoli condizioni di vassallaggio. A questa data, il 1171, risale la fondazione ufficiale del paese.

The square, for a long time the centre of the city life, is dedicated to the two founders of Castellana. As a result of the disputes between Ruggero II and the Normans, the ancient village was destroyed. In December 1171, the Abbot Eustasio, who aimed to repopulate the feud of Castellana to enjoy the fertile annuities, gave the church of San Leone Magno and the surrounding lands to the two settlers, Nicola and Costa, coming from the land of Otranto, with favourable conditions of vassalage. To this date, 1171, dates back the official foundation of the town.
